How Should I React? Learning to Face Chemical Risks with Virtual Reality

Published in 2025 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW), 2025

Our project proposes to use Virtual Reality (VR) to train chemists to react to incidents. It explores the effects of multisensoriality on learner VR sense of presence and immersion, and the effects of visualising (in/out of VR) behavioural and physiological indicators on learner reflexivity. Multisensoriality implementation, robust capture of behavioural and physiological data, and the design of relevant indicators are our main challenges. Three situations involving chemical incidents have been developed, engaging the learner to react accordingly. We present the first implementations of this VR training environment and the results of our first user studies.

Effect of material properties on emotion: a virtual reality study

Published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2023

Designers know that part of the appreciation of a product comes from the properties of its materials. These materials define the object’s appearance and produce emotional reactions that can influence the act of purchase. Although known and observed as important, the affective level of a material remains difficult to assess. While many studies have been conducted regarding material colors, here we focus on two material properties that drive how light is reflected by the object: its metalness and smoothness. In this context, this work aims to study the influence of these properties on the induced emotional response.

Potentialités de la réalité virtuelle pour la restitution immersive de l’expérience sensible

Published in Expression sensible, 2023

Toward a human-like sound perception for reactive virtual agents

Published in Proceedings of the 23rd ACM International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents, 2023

Human social interactions rely on multisensory cues. In this regard, visual and auditory cues are paramount during the initiation of an interaction. In this preliminary work, we propose an approach to let Intelligent Virtual Agents (IVAs) simulating sound perception capabilities. Our model targets to control IVAs’ reactive behaviour through their analysis of perceived other agents’ emitted sounds. For that, we explored auditory features close to the human system.
